Cynthia McDermott

Hometown: I was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and grew up near Mount Vernon. My parents still live in the house I grew up in.

My Story: I grew up in the Presbyterian Church and still have some Calvinist leanings. I was very involved in my church and youth group. I drifted away from church during college and came back when I had children. I don’t have a dramatic conversion experience to share. My journey to Christ was rooted in my childhood and has grown over time. Our Senior Pastor, Kevin Baker, likes to say: “Each encounter with God changes you forever.” My story is more about how each encounter has taken me to the next step. And although I feel like I have come a long way, I still have a long way to go. God continues to mold me and change meespecially through adversity. I can look back and see that some of my closest moments with God were at some of the lowest points of my life. Although I can’t pinpoint an exact time, I do have an assurance of my salvation through Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Ministry Area: Congregational Care. I am in charge of the ministries where people take care of each other, fellowship together, visit the hospitalized, write cards to those who need encouragement, pray for each other, and UMM and UMW where men and women join together for fellowship and service projects in the community. I am also in charge of new members and helping them get connected and find their place in our congregation.

Family: I am a single mom of two great kids: Diana, 15, and William, 13. Diana is a freshman at Sherwood H.S. and I am reliving the drama of high school through her experiences!

Passion: I love people of all ages. I love to hang out with young kids and experience their energy and outlook on life. I love to see the world through their eyes with wonder and innocence. I love to talk with teens and adults and exchange life stories. I love to share in the joys and the sorrows with others around me. I also love to read about theology and how to improve the way we work together as the Body of Christ.

Favorite Pastime Activities: Hanging out with friends and family; singing and harmonizing with others; and I love doing home improvement projects and building thingsespecially when I get to use power tools!

Little-Known Fact: I was a terrible two. I climbed to the top of a 40 ft tree when I was 2 1/2 years old and shouted to my mom, “I can see everything up here!” I still find myself looking at trees and plotting how to climb them.
